I often find myself drawn to objects that most would consider mundane. Utilitarian, manufactured boxes; discarded, crumpled newspapers; imprints in snow or mud; where others see garbage if they don’t ignore it altogether, I see temporarily captured moments of human interaction and emotion. They tell a surprisingly personal history that contradicts their intended or interpreted function. I mimic these relatively passive objects in clay, emphasizing and exaggerating their formal characteristics, so that I may establish a permanence to their ephemeral, expressive records.
